Here is an excerpt of Dr Mercola's comment about the use of male HPV vaccine as a way to prevent cancer. * About 90 percent of all HPV infections go away on their own within two years. * A JAMA study found that just 2 percent of the patients in the study were infected by the kinds of HPV that put them at high-risk for developing cervical cancer. * A little more than 3 percent were infected with the types of HPV that Gardasil was concocted to prevent. I find it very interesting that Gardiasil which may have caused deaths to several little girls (read my blog post below) was actually useful to only 3 percent of them. A sadistic and resentful ex-boyfriend distributed pornographic fliers displaying his ex having sex with disease carrier written across because he knew she had herpes. He just couldn't handle being dumped or so it seemed so he started faxing these fliers at his ex girlfriend workplace and outside her son's middle school as revenge. He's now being prosecuted for giving that information out. I hope he goes to jail and gets to pay a huge fee. What saddens me most is that he didn't care for her ex poor son who has been traumatized for seeing his mother displayed like that. Who thinks about the kids? It seems not enough people. I think CBS coverage of the story is pathetic and fails to see the trial stakes. You may start to think that I hate pharmaceutical companies and that I just want to say nasty things about them. I don't. They once saved my life and this is not something you can easily forget. If that was ever true, it is certainly not true now. Drug companies are hugely profitable enterprises, and they spent more on political lobbying than any other industry between 1998 and 2004. The transformation is owed in large measure to blockbuster drugs, meaning any medication that generates more than $1 billion in sales annually. It might have begun with the selling of Zantac, an anti-ulcer drug that came on the market in 1983. GlaxoSmithKline priced it more expensively than the competitor drug Tagamet, to imply that it was superior. In reality, Zantac was chemically almost identical to Tagamet and no more effective. " GlaxoSmithKline manufactures and promotes 2 herpes drugs under the brand names of Zovirax and Valtrex. One is no longer patented whereas the other is. Could the same thing be happening with them? Its not just your eyes, ears or noses which are governed by genetics. Scientists have discovered that genes may be responsible for an increased susceptibility to HSV or the Herpes Simplex Virus. Researches at the Utah School of Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases have identified region on the long arm of human chromosome 21 with high odds--at least 1,000-to-1--of being linked to cold sore susceptibility. The researchers further say they pinpointed six specific genes in that chromosomal region as candidates for making people prone to outbreaks of cold sores (also called "fever blisters"). Cold sores occur when the herpes virus reactivates from its inactive state within the nerve, infecting the lip, nose, or face. This discovery is a breakthrough in the eternal fight against Herpes. As John D Krisel MD pointed out "One or more of these genes might make excellent targets for new drugs to reduce the number of herpes outbreaks, These studies were conducted using linkage analysis. The researches traced genetic markers in families to identify regions on chromosomes that harbor disease genes. When genetic mutations are passed from parent to offspring, genetic markers near the disease gene are passed along as well. By identifying markers shared among family members, researchers can locate regions of chromosomes where genes responsible for disease may lie. Recent studies have suggested that Acyclovir, a general medicine used to treat the commonly found herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2), does not decrease the risk of HIV infection in people infected with HSV-2. The Phase III clinical trial was led by the University of Washington in Seattle, in coordination with the HIV Prevention Trials Network, an international consortium funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the National Institutes of Health. The earlier researches had indicated that patients infected with HSV-2 are at a greater risk of contracting HIV. Scientists had hoped that due to its ability to suppress Herpes Virus and the associated genital sores and breaks in the skin, acyclovir could reduce the possibility of HIV transmission via sexual intercourse with a HSV-2 infected person. Although Acyclovir did not help in the risk reduction of HIV, Dr. Connie Celum, the committee chairperson, indicated that acyclovir did reduce the genital ulcers associated with HSV-2. He also indicated that now the committee will concentrate on researching the factors which make HSV-2 a risk factor for HIV. My comment: I'm not surprised. I read shortly after a reassuring article saying that it didn't mean that herpes medication didn't reduce herpes symptoms or shedding. However I don't see any other way. This study could mean that genital herpes medicines fail to prevent micro-ulcerations caused by very mild herpes symptoms and in other words fail to protect from other STDs. This could also contradict the previous findings saying that daily herpes medical treatment did reduce the probability of herpes infection. If it does, it should logically also have an impact on other STD transmission. To me the only product that works today is a local ointment. I'll tell all about it in the second edition of Herpes Wise.

Zostavax, a recently FDA approved herpes zoster vaccine for shingles prevention (May 25) was recently advised by the US CDC (Center for Disease Control) and ACIP (Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) as a preventive measure against shingles to populations older than 59 years old. Zostavax is not a treatment for shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. It is a single dose injection that can prevent herpes zoster symptoms. Anyone who has been infected with chickenpox which represents more than 90 percent of adults in the United States is at risk for shingles. The risk for shingles increases as people get older. In a randomized double-blind study, Zostavax prevented herpes zoster in 51 of the patients aged between 60 and 69. The success rate decreased for people beyond 69. Thats why it is recommended to people who are in their 60s. This herpes zoster vaccine precedes another herpes preventive vaccine for genital herpes. Starpharma, an Australian company, has recently announced that they would start a US trial of their microbicidal gel, VivaGel. They will start recruiting 30 female volunteers into the University of California in San Francisco. The trials will assess the safety of VivaGel when applied vaginally twice daily for 14 days in healthy women. The trials represent the first NIH-funded research of a microbicide for prevention of genital herpes and would be the first microbicide approved for this indication, Starpharma said. This trial represents a key milestone in the development of VivaGel, and has been supported by NIAID and our clinical collaborators in the U.S. and Kenya. Given the high prevalence of genital herpes in Europe and the United States, and concern about it, we also consider prevention of this disease to be a commercially very important indication for VivaGel," said Starpharma CEO Jackie Fairley. In the meanwhile, VivaGel is also being studied in a trial in Australia, for the prevention of HIV transmission.

Two caregivers are so frighten of herpes that they are suing a disabled woman for transmitting the herpes virus. It is obvious that this disabled woman didn't do it consciously and they should sue the clinic for not protecting their safety at work but I guess it is easier to sue a herpetic disabled woman than your employer. The article concluded that now they are at high risk of developing cancer. I guess they were talking about HPV then. There is one study that suggested in 2002 that genital herpes could double the risk of contracting cervical cancer but nothing is proven. I think journalists should think twice before demonizing herpes this way because one day people with herpes may sue them back for making their lives miserable. A new study presented to the 44th Infectious Diseases Society of Amercia (IDSA) meeting in Toronto on October 12th shows that HIV levels in the blood stream increase during HSV-2 reactivations. HIV is even more present in the rectum than in the blood stream during HSV-2 reactivation. Therefore, unprotected anal sex greatly increases the chances of HIV transmission.

Montana State University has developed a genetically modified strain of the herpes virus that when introduced in mice showed 100 efficacy as a herpes vaccine. Mice vaccinated with this new herpes strain showed no sign of the disease 30 days after being exposed to a lethal "wild-type" strain of herpes simplex virus. A second group of mice exposed to the same "wild-type" strain of herpes simplex virus but without receiving the vaccine died within six days. This research shows potential for a human vaccine against herpes.
