Abreva Cold Sore Remedy
Abreva cold sore remedy is the new FDA approved OTC or other the counter cold sore treatment by GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Zovirax. Its new patented active ingredient is Docanosol. Docanosol can prevent replication of the herpes virus in healthy cells by making them momentarily "herpes proof".
Abreva also contains benzyl alcohol. Even though stated
as a non active ingredient benzyl alcohol is a common drug preservative
used for its anti-itching, anesthetic and antiseptic properties.
So it may add some value to the product.
I have found interesting information on docanosol
at one of GlaxoSmithKline's website: Dental
Professional.com. Even though we're not dentist (at least I'm
not) I think we deserve more thorough information than the superficial
public product presentation that they make at Abreva.com.
So here is an interesting abstract from their FAQ at Dental Professional.com.
"What is docosanol?
Docosanol is the active ingredient in Abreva cold
soer remedy. Docosanol has been clinically proven to shorten cold
sore healing time. Docosanol and its metabolite (n-docosanoic acid)
are present in many common foods and are virtually unavoidable in
the diet. Common dietary sources of n-docosanoic acid include chocolate,
peanuts, and certain oils. It also occurs in a variety of unprocessed
fruits and vegetables.
What is the mode of action of docosanol? Docosanol works by changing the cell membrane which surrounds healthy skin cells. The modified cell membrane acts as a barrier to the cold sore virus so that the virus cannot enter the cell to begin the process of infection.

Can you explain how Abreva's docosanol blocks cold sores?
Treating cells with docosanol alters the properties of the host cell membrane in a way that inhibits or blocks, the causative agent of cold sores – the herpes simplex virus – from entering the cell via its normal pathway. Although individual virus particles are not inhibited from attaching to or binding to the herpes virus specific receptors on the cell membrane, the viral envelope, and the cell membrane cannot fuse as is required for productive infection. Because there is no viral/cell fusion, the genomic material of the virus is less likely to enter the cell so viral replication cannot occur.* Is docosanol an antiviral?
Docosanol is not classified as an antiviral. Typically
nucleoside analogues, like penciclovir (Denavir®) and acyclovir
(Zovirax®) are considered to be the only antivirals that are used
in herpes labialis, and they are classified as antivirals because
their activity occurs in virus-infected cells. Docosanol’s mode
of action is distinct from this, in that its mode of action takes
place only in healthy cells, where it works on the cell membrane
to help inhibit the ability of the virus to fuse with the cell membrane
so that the virus is less likely to enter the cell to begin the
process of infection.
How does Abreva cold sore treatment compare to Denavir?
They are both approved to speed healing of cold sores. However, they work differently. Denavir is an antiviral whereas ABREVA is not. Denavir is available only by prescription whereas ABREVA is available OTC.
Does ABREVA cold sore remedy provide symptomatic relief?
Abreva cold sore ointment provides symptomatic relief
as a result of the healing process. It is clinically proven to shorten
the duration of symptoms, such as tingling, pain, burning, and itching.
The cream is a soothing formula that contains no irritants.
Will ABREVA cold sore treatment work if a patient comes to me after
a blister has already formed?
Best results with ABREVA are obtained when treatment stars early
– at the tingle/bump/redness stage of the cold sore.
Can docosanol be used to prevent cold sores?
Docosanol has not been tested, nor is it indicated for preventing
cold sores."(end of quote)
All right. But is Abreva cold sore remedy really efficient? Abreva cold sore remedy eliminates the symptoms associated with oral herpes, cold sores and fever blisters in 2.2 days. So that is a pretty positive aspect of Abreva.
It reduces colds sores healing time to 4.1 days versus 4.8 days
with a placebo. In other words this may mean that it reduces the
healing time of cold sores by 0.7 day. So honestly I don't understand
what the big fuss about.
My conclusion is you may consider Abreva cold sore remedy if your cold sores tend to take for ever to heal and are very painful and if you're the kind of person who needs a medical/FDA approved label to try anything. Abreva cold sore remedy appears to be safe. But I don't find the test results very exciting. You can check this information at Abrevapharmacist.com. Here's the label information for Abreva:

Your Abreva Reviews or Testimonials :
If I apply it when the first
stinging/burning starts, it either completely stops the blister from forming,
or makes them much smaller and faster healing. The key is repeated
applications during the burning phase. Has made a tremendous difference for
me.

I've been using abreva for about a year now. Within the course of 1 year, I've only had to use it 3 times. I apply it at the first signs of a cold sore on my lip. The first time I used it, it was effective in that it prevented the cold sore from appearing. The second time, it was less effective. I just used it for the third time yesterday and it had absolutely no effect on the cold sore, which was disappointing and frustrating. :(
