Chapstick Cold Sore Therapy

Chapstick

Chapstick cold sore therapy is the new OTC treatment for cold sores and fever blisters provided by this famous brand name. It is designed to help relieve pain and itching while moisturizing the skin. I've already analyzed most of its ingredients in my page, OTC treatment for colds sores. For better comprehension please visit this page. It contains a lot of information I will not cover here.

In brief, Chapstick cold sore therapy contains benzocaine, menthol, camphor, benzyl alcohol which can either soothe the pain or ease the itching or are antiseptic or can do all of these things, white petrolatum (usually known as the brand name vaseline), allantoin and aloe vera, vitamin E which can moisturize the skin, sodium lauryl sulfate i.e. a detergent, and some preservatives

Is Chapstick cold sore therapy really efficient?

Well with all the numbing agents it contains it should be very good at killing the pain and the itching. It contains several skin allergens i.e. ingredients that may cause allergies and skin irritation. Please do read the warnings below.

I don't like the use of petrolatum. I think it is much safer to use natural oils. But of course it is more expensive. I've sent Wyeth an email asking them what purity and quality levels of petrolatum white they use in their products. Let's see what kind of answer we get.

Chapstick cold sore therapy contains an aloe extract and some sodium lauryl sulfate which both have some antiviral effect on herpes. However, they may not be in sufficient quantity to have any effect at all.

My conclusion is that Chapstick cold sore therapy is a strong anti-itch, numbing and moisturizing balm. But depending on people, it can be irritant to the skin and cause allergies. It may contain some hidden anti-herpetic agent but probably in insufficient quantity to be acknowledge as a potential cold sore remedy. If you experience no allergies to it you can apply it on fever blisters or cold sores for immediate relief.
