Genital Herpes Herbal Treatments
Several genital herpes herbal
treatments can lessen herpes outbreak severity and frequency. I
believe Eleutherococcus or Siberian ginseng to be the best one.
Below are the most commonly known genital herpes herbs.

reviews:
Astragalus
membranaceus root:
Astragalus is native to northern Asia, but it also
grows in most temperate climate areas of Europe and North America.
Astragalus is mostly used in Chinese medicine but
has also become a more and more popular supplement in the Western
world.
In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus
is often combined with other herbs such as angelica and ginseng
to treat herpes, cancers, diabetes, kidney infections,
strokes, and boost the immune system. Many studies of astragalus
have been published in China but didn't grab the attention of the
rest of the world scientific audience.
According to studies, it seems that astragalus protects
bone marrow cells, which play a vital role in the immune system,
and is also a broad spectrum antibiotic.
There is some evidence that astragalus has
potential as genital herpes herbal treatment. It seems to be active
against herpes virus 1 and 2. But further human testing
is required to prove the efficacy of astragalus as a valid genital
herpes herbal treatment. Chinese medicine suggests astragalus
be taken on a regular basis to prevent herpes infections
rather than to treat crises. But preliminary Chinese studies suggest
that astragalus may be efficient as a genital herpes herbal suppressive
remedy as well as a genital herpes herbal treatment.
The easiest way to take astragalus is in powdered
root capsules. Usually the recommended dosage ranges from
400 mg to 7000 mg per day. But dosage greater than 28 g per day
may have an immunosuppressive effect. In the United States, astragalus
products are not generally standardized. So it's impossible to know
if two products have the same amount of active ingredients. That's
why it may be a good idea to consult a Chinese doctor.
People with auto-immune conditions, transplant recipients,
hemophiliac patients, pregnant and breast-feeding women should not
take astragalus. Also, the effects of astragalus on the immune system
contraindicate using it while taking corticosteroids or immunosuppressive
drugs as it may enhance the effects of antiviral drugs.
Common side effects may include frequent
urination, gastro intestinal discomfort, lower blood pressure and
lower blood sugar. Astragalus may interact with other drugs and
plants. So it is very important that to tell your doctor that you're
using it to avoid negative interactions.

Eleutherococcus
or Siberian Ginseng:
A
study of Elegan product made of pure standardized extract of eleutherococcus
tested the activity of eleutherococcus on genital herpes recurrences.
More patients taking Elegan reported a reduction in severity, duration
and frequency of outbreaks than those taking the placebo. However
no results appeared before 3 months. This suggests
Eleutherococcus is an interesting genital herpes herbal
treatment that can suppress and prevent genital herpes infections.
However genital herpes can be caused by herpes virus 1 and an in
vitro study suggests that eleutherococcus cannot inhibit herpes
virus 1 (HVS-1).
Echinacea:
Echinacea or Cornflower. Echinacea is one of the most
popular alternative treatments in the United States. In vitro and
in vivo studies suggest that echinacea may have anti-inflammatory,
antiviral and immunomodulatory effects.
Echinacea showed activity against herpes virus 2 (HVS-2),
usually associated with genital herpes, in an in vitro study. But
in vitro and animal studies are usually insufficient to prove efficacy.
Two studies of the effects of echinacea on herpes
were published in Pubmed.
One showed that echinacea had no statistically significant
benefit that could be detected in the treatment of frequently
recurrent genital herpes and the other that echinacea had
an effect on herpes virus 1 only after exposure to light.
Echinacea is one of the least potent genital herpes
herbal treatments. I don't think it is useful. But if you want to
try it anyway you may want to take echinacea powder, 1 g 3 times
a day or 1 g of brewed roots in a cup of tea 6 times a day at the
onset of a genital herpes outbreak.
Echinacea should be avoided by people with allergies
and asthma because they are more likely to be allergic to it. And
people with auto-immune diseases, like HIV and lupus should ask
their doctors for recommendations as it is unsure how echinacea
will affect their immune systems.
