Can Herpes Kill You?
Most of the times the answer is NO but when and how can herpes kill someone is the question.Considering the number of oral and genital herpes infected people in the world population combined, if herpes could kill you, there probably wouldn’t be any humans left on the planet today. Fortunately, herpes is not usually lethal. It often causes unpleasant symptoms that come back from time to time. Commonly, the worst cases include very painful outbreaks, flu-like symptoms or symptoms which seem never to go away. But can herpes kill someone? Has it happened in the past? Unfortunately, yes. It can kill or severely hurt two types of people, babies or people with very severe immune issues like AIDS. As you’re reading this article I will assume you don’t belong to the first category; i.e. babies. But if you belong to the second group and have AIDS you are probably aware that herpes can sometimes promote a type of skin cancer, Kaposi’s sarcoma.
However, the type of virus that causes Kaposi’s sarcoma cancer is not the same one that causes oral or genital herpes. The Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus is also referred to as the Human Herpes Virus 8 or HHV-8. Most people who have this virus never get Kaposi’s sarcoma cancer but it is commonly spread among AIDS sufferers and sometimes affects elderly people whose immunity got weakened with age. This type of cancer spreads from several parts of the body at the same time, affecting the connective tissues of organs and can cause death in some cases. This means that a HHV-8 which belongs to the herpes family can sometimes cause death so herpes kills sometimes. But can herpes type 1 or 2, both viruses being responsible for causing either oral or genital herpes kill someone? Like I said earlier, the answer is no for almost everyone except babies. New-borns who come in contact with herpes do not have a fully operational immune system to protect them from herpes infection. The reason why oral or genital herpes only lasts for three weeks and does not spread all over the body is that at some point the immune system kicks in and starts attacking the herpes infection. New-borns’ immune systems are usually not prepared to do that if the mother has never come into contact with herpes during delivery. Usually when a baby dies from herpes, the news make it to the papers. This means it is not that common. One explanation to that is that 80% to 90% of the population has been infected by either herpes one or two, mothers included. It is thought that mothers who have developed herpes antibodies, a defence against herpes infection, before delivery, , transfer some of their own immunity to their child at birth. This protects the child from lethal herpes infection. So babies usually die when the mother has recently come in contact with herpes during delivery or when the mother has never had any form of herpes and her baby comes into contact with herpes soon after birth. To sum up, HSV-1 or HSV-2 herpes have never killed anyone who is of an age to read this article. However, it wrecks the lives of many, especially those with genital herpes.
