Lysine Herpes and Cold Sores Information
Can lysine help against herpes? Lysine herpes benefits have been
scientifically studied. It was suggested for the treatment and prevention.
of oral and genital herpes. Lysine is an amino acid that can’t
be synthesized by the body. Eating some regularly may help in the
fight against herpes.
Does
lysine help against herpes?
Research on this matter is quite contradictory. Results seem to
depend highly on dosage. It appears to be an effective agent for
reduction of the severity, frequency and healing time of herpes
recurrences.
Lysine,
Herpes and Cold Sores Research:
Most research is about lysine impact on herpes virus type 1 replication.
More recently research has demonstrated that herpes needs arginine
to replicate and a positive lysine/arginine ratio could suppress
herpes replication. This suggests that lysine could also suppress
genital herpes.
More
than 200 studies about lysine and oral herpes were conducted during
the 1980’s. One found that the frequency of herpes fever blisters
was reduced when taking 1248 mg/lysine per day but that a daily
dosage of 624 mg per day didn’t have any impact on oral herpes
recurrences.
Another
group studied lysine impact on herpes cold sores when taken immediately
in massive dosage after the first signs of a herpes outbreak. No
particular benefit was perceived by patients.
Another
study conducted by Griffith and colleagues showed that patients
taking 1000 mg of lysine 3 times daily experienced fewer outbreaks,
shorter healing time and milder symptoms. This study included genital
and oral herpes patients and was conducted over a 6 month period
on 136 patients at the beginning of the period.
Older
studies showed that lysine had little effect on herpes outbreaks
but they used lower dosage.
Lysine,
arginine and Herpes:
Lysine
and arginine are two amino-acids. Amino-acids bind themselves together
to form proteins. They are often quoted together because they have
a negative relationship. In theory, the more lysine and the less
arginine, the better. Research suggests that a high lysine/low arginine
ratio prevents herpes from replicating.

Herpes Supplements:
Herp-Eeze: A
very good lysine supplement that can really help for herpes is Herp-eeze. It is specifically formulated to combat
the herpes virus. It combines lysine with other powerfull ingredients like prunella vulgaris
which makes it more potent than other lysine supplements. It is important
to keep high levels of lysine at all time if you want to prevent
herpes symptoms so you should take it at least twice a day.
Quantum Super Lysine Plus+ Immune System : Super Lysine+ is most useful for people suffering from cold sores or HSV-1 genital herpes. It is also specifically designed to assist the immune system and provides good herpes prevention support. It will help you get through cold seasons smoothly because it contains vitamin C. I feel Herp-eeze will work better on more severe symptoms and genital herpes than Super Lysine Plus+ Immune System. Super Lysine will work best if used to prevent mild herpes symptoms and cold sores.
Super Lysine+ Cream testimonial :
I just started trying herbal remedies to treat my herpes outbreaks. WOW! it really helps! The sores used to last about 10days and were very painful. I started puting a lysine cream on them twice a day after cleansing the area with peroxide and the pain was almost instantly gone and the blisters were gone 3 times faster! I love this stuff!

Lysine
Herpes Dosage for Prevention:
Proper
dosage may vary from person to person, but according to research,
it should range from 500 mg to 1000 mg, 1 to 3 times daily. Please
ask your doctor. I believe a good lysine dosage for genital herpes
is 1000mg to 1500 mg a day.
Lysine
and cold sores:
There is some evidence that it can suppress oral herpes cold sores.
Lysine supplementation can therefore be recommended as a treatment
of herpes cold sores and fever blisters.

Foods
high in lysine:
Meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products are very rich in lysine.
Vegetarians can find vegetable foods containing some like corn,
brewer’s yeast and sauerkraut. The best food for lysine is
plain low-fat yogurt. It has the highest levels of lysine for the
lowest levels of arginine. Kefir is also a wonderful source of Lysine.

Creams and Ointments for Cold Sores:
Many ointments are available on the market, but lysine efficiency
has been studied only as an oral supplement. Therefore, there is
no scientific data backing the use of such ointments. However, you
may want to try applying lysine cream on your cold sores or fever
blisters especially if they tingle a lot. Some people have reported
these ointments can have a soothing effect. They come either in
lipstick, lip balm or cream. Try to use ointments that have other
ingredients than lysine as well as, such as essential oil or grapefruit,
vitamin A, C and E and zinc.

General information on lysine:
Side effects:
Some side effects might appear with a very high dosage (10 g).
They consist mainly of nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. In
one case, a 44 year old woman developed Franconi’s syndrome,
manifested as tubulo-intersistial nephritis, after taking 3000 mg
of lysine per day for 5 years.
Lysine and pregnancy:
Lysine supplementation is generally not recommended during pregnancy
and breast feeding because there is no data proving its safety during
pregnancy. Tell your doctor that you’re taking lysine if you’re
pregnant or considering having a baby.
Lysine
and children:
Children need three to four times more lysine than adults. The
medical literature has not reported any adverse effects specifically
related to the use of lysine in children. However there is no sufficient
information available regarding the use of lysine supplements in
children. Do not give any supplement to a child without first talking
to the child's doctor.
Lysine
drug interaction:
Large doses of lysine may increase the toxicity of certain antibiotics.
Do not take it if you are taking any of the following antibiotics:
- gentamicin (Garamycin)
- tobramycin (Nebcin, TOBI)
- amikacin (Amikin)
- kanamycin (Kantrex)
- netilmicin (Netromycin)
- neomycin (Neo-Tabs, Mycifradin, Neo-fradin)
- paromomycin (Humatin) or streptomycin.
For more information, please contact your doctor.
Lysine
contraindication:
Lysine is contraindicated in those with hyperlysinemia or hyperlysinuria,
a very rare genetic disease.
Lysine
deficiency:
Lysine deficiency is extremely rare in developed countries. It
is mostly a combination of stress and malnutrition that sometimes
causes a deficiency. It may lead to immune system malfunction and
disease. But if you’re not undernourished, it is highly likely
that you get enough lysine in your diet. Most people in developed
countries eat about 6 to 10 g of lysine per day on average.
