Zilactin cold sore relief gel basically contains
antiseptic and numbing agents. It contains benzyl alcohol as an
active ingredient. As you may already know benzyl alcohol has
a positive action on itching and pain and is antiseptic.
Zilactin's inactive ingredients include salicylic
acid, a peeling agent, boric acid, a mild anitseptic, tanic acid
commonly used to treat wounds or prevent blisters and other ingredients.
I give further details about these ingredients in my OTC
cold sore medicine page. Please give it a visit for further
information.
Furthermore Zilactin cold sore relief gel action
is long lasting because it forms a "bioadhesive seal"
where it is applied. The seal protects the skin and keeps Zilactin's
ingredients in place. Zilactin's website isn't very informative.
But you can find it here.
Is Zilactin Cold Sore Relief Gel really efficient?
Well, I don't see in these ingredients anything
that really targets the cause of cold sores i.e. herpes but I
see many things that can alleviate the symptoms and keep the cold
sore area germ free. Alcohol can help dry blisters faster. Zilactin
doesn't contain any moisturizer but its salicylic acid is likely
to make your lips softer (depending on its concentration). You
are not very likely to become allergic to it. But it is possible.
You may also find it a little too drying.
My conclusion is that it is a nice
product to alleviate the symptoms. It is useful if you experience
a lot of pain and already have fever blisters. It protects the
skin and prevents bacterial infection. But I don't see how it
could stop herpes cold sores from appearing. Don't use for prevention
it could be harmful to your skin if used over a long period of
time.
